| Nature dictatesIn times of plenty we must put on weight to be stored in the form of fat to be used for energy in the expected lean times ahead. Our warm summer periods produce more food, allowing us to use less energy to obtain it. In summer, our system tells us to put on weight and continue eating to store fat, as fat is needed for future energy needs. The winter period demands more energy to keep warm and to find our food as it would be scarce and we would need more time and exercise to obtain it. We would need to start the winter with more weight; in other words, more energy in the form of fat, so that we could endure all possibilities of severe conditions and still have a life sustaining weight at the end of winter As an example, let us look at the brown bears, they eat plenty in spring in order to regain the weight they lost over winter. Once they have reached their ideal weight, then their courting and mating activities give them plenty of exercise which keeps their weight in control, using up any fat they may be taking in. Then summer comes along and fruit ripens, the shrubs can hardly bear up under the weight of their fruit, the deer have put on weight with much fat, all the animals put on weight; even the salmon coming upriver are heavy with roe, the weight of roe making them sluggish. This is the time for the bear to really put on fat reserves for winter. Everything
it eats has it's own fat reserves with the result that the bear gains
more and more weight. By the time it goes into hibernation it
appears grossly overweight; now it has plenty of fat reserves
to
see it through winter. Fat is goodWe get two and a quarter
more
units of energy from fat than we get from the
equivalent
amount of carbohydrate (sugar) and protein. Our overall weight consists of fat, protein and water, plus a small amount of vitamins and minerals. The minerals don't really contribute to our weight. Although the weight of the water in our body is a high percentage of our total body weight, excess water weight is not normally a threat to our health. If the water weight does increase due to water retention, it can be controlled with diuretics, either natural or synthetic; best to visit your Doctor before trying diuretics as a weight control. Protein, (muscle), together with bone, make up the bulk of our healthy body weight, but with regards to fat: although a small percentage of fat is necessary at all times and an increase in the weight of fat is necessary if a period of scarcity is expected, it is otherwise unhealthy to carry excess weight. A gross excess of fat constitutes a real threat to life. Now
back to our nature!! With fat we can exercise
for two and a quarter
times longer to find our food in the winter. Note: In times of extreme
energy needs,without fat,
our system breaks down the protein (muscles) of our body
to obtain the required energy it needs. So starvation is not
good for us. We can die from too little weight, we can also die from too much weight. In the
absence of lean times Unless we exercise,
we can expect to continue putting on weight in
the form of fat as we are not using any fat for energy. There
can be no successful
weight control
without exercise. If you are not prepared to exercise, then just forget about weight control; you would be wasting your time and money. There are inborn weight control mechanisms, but they are much less effective than exercise. In our times of plentyThe only inborn
weight control mechanisms we have are
hunger and the feeling of fullness.
In our times of plemty, we eat because we like eating, not because we are hungry. We eat whether we are hungry or not and override the mechanism to sense fullness and control our weight. Our stomach and
intestines enlarge
and the problem grows, we gain more weight and even more weight until
we really have a weight problem. Now our efforts to lose
weight
are proved futile as any weight loss we do manage to achieve
is
promptly overturned and we not only regain the weight we lost, but
increase our weight gain even more. We put on fat.
And more
fat. There is a
case where a house had to be broken down and a crane hired to remove a
grossly overweight, fat, obese person to take him to hospital!
He
died shortly afterwards. That's an indication of how much
weight
a person can gain and how bad it is for a person's health. Don't
laugh at it! We are all in the same boat and if we don't
control

we believe our weight problem is from an incurable ailment - obesity.
In fact, obesity is just another name for extreme over-weight. Many of us rationalise with ourselves to the point where we believe that our overweight image "is a symbol of affluence"! These days, all the affluent
people spend fortunes on keeping themselves slim! Some use liposuction to take away the fat. Most of them follow weight
